Choose Kindness

Here it is. Election Day eve. Technically Election Day early morning. This is easily the most momentous election in the last 50 years. While the decision will be made tomorrow, the results won’t be known for a while. But regardless of what that decision is, we need to remember something.

No matter what happens, we need to be kind to each other. No matter who wins, with an election this divided, the inclination will be to dig in and give payback. I have already seen it on my Facebook feed. People saying that if Biden wins, they are not going to let the Trump supporters in their orbit off the hook. And I can understand that desire. And I have heard people say that if Trump wins that they wouldn’t pay their taxes.

But here’s the thing. Societies only work when people work together. We need to heal the divides, not deepen them. Not paying taxes only hurts people, no matter who is in charge. And while we need to hold people who are not tolerant of others accountable, if those people renounce those views and work toward a better society, we need to acknowledge that and give them a chance.

If we want to have any chance of being a functional society again, we need to start acting like one. Kindness, forgiveness, and empathy are the centerpiece of practically all working societies. Without them, we are lost.

So remember. No matter what happens, no matter who wins, be kind.
